Your smile can take a beating over a lifetime. Your teeth can become cracked or chipped. They may be spaced too far apart, or they may need to have their shape restored. Over time, dark-colored food and drinks and tobacco can stain your teeth. Sometimes, stained teeth can be brightened with a whitening treatment. But, if your teeth have been darkened by medication, disease or injury, whitening treatments will probably not work.
Dental veneers are a great way to restore your smile. Not only can veneers conceal cracks, chips and discoloration, they can also close the gaps between your teeth, or restore them to their proper shape. They are also shaded to match the rest of your smile. If you and your dentist decide that dental sealants are a good choice for you, your dentist will remove a small amount of enamel from your teeth, and take an impression of them. The dentist will send that impression to a dental lab to have your permanent veneers made. While they are being crafted, your dentist will fit your with temporary veneers. When your permanent veneers are ready, your dentist will fix them to your teeth with dental cement, trim the excess material and polish them.
Your veneers can last 10 to 15 years, but they will eventually need to be replaced. You can damage your veneers by grinding or clenching your teeth, or chewing on ice or other objects; and using your teeth to open packages. You can prolong the life of your veneers with proper brushing, flossing, regular visits to your dentist and by wearing a mouthguard if you play sports.
